Understanding the parts of Medicare

Medicare has four main parts. Knowing what each covers is the first step to choosing the right plan — and avoiding costly coverage gaps.

A
Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care. Most people get Part A at no premium.

  • Inpatient hospital care
  • Skilled nursing facility
  • Hospice care
  • Limited home health
B
Medical Insurance

Covers outpatient care, doctor visits, preventive services, and medical equipment. Standard premium in 2026 is $185.00/month.

  • Doctor & specialist visits
  • Outpatient procedures
  • Preventive screenings
  • Durable medical equipment
C
Medicare Advantage

Also called Part C — a private plan alternative to Original Medicare that bundles Parts A & B and usually adds drug coverage, dental, and vision.

  • All Part A & B benefits
  • Often $0 monthly premium
  • Dental, vision & hearing
  • Prescription drug coverage
D
Drug Coverage

Prescription drug coverage added on top of Original Medicare or a Medicare Supplement plan. Plans vary by formulary and pharmacy network.

  • Prescription drugs
  • $2,000 annual out-of-pocket cap in 2025
  • Preferred pharmacy savings
  • Mail-order options

Why Choose Instacare

We work for you, not the carriers.

Most people don't realize their Medicare agent matters as much as their plan. An independent broker like Instacare gives you access to every carrier — and advice that's always in your corner.

💰

Our service is completely free

We're compensated by carriers when you enroll. That means expert Medicare guidance costs you nothing — the same premium whether you use us or not.

🔒

Your privacy is protected

We follow strict privacy and data security standards. Your information is only used to help match you with the right Medicare coverage — never sold to third parties for marketing.

⚕️

We help you avoid costly mistakes

Missing your enrollment window can cost you lifetime penalties. We make sure you enroll at the right time and never miss a deadline.

Important Dates

Medicare enrollment periods

Timing matters. Missing the right window can lock you out of coverage or create lifetime penalties. Here's what you need to know.

New to Medicare
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
3 months before to 3 months after your 65th birthday
Your first chance to sign up for Medicare Parts A and B. This is the most important window — missing it can trigger permanent premium penalties.
Annual
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
October 15 – December 7 each year
Switch, drop, or add Medicare Advantage or Part D drug plans. Changes take effect January 1. This is when we do your annual plan review.
Special Circumstances
Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
Triggered by qualifying life events
If you're losing employer coverage, moving, or have other qualifying events, you may have a limited window to enroll or change plans outside the normal periods.
⚠️

Don't miss your window. The Part B late enrollment penalty is 10% added to your premium permanently for each 12-month period you were eligible but didn't enroll. Our advisors help you navigate timing and avoid these costly mistakes — call us before you turn 65.

Common Questions

Medicare questions, answered.

Still have questions? Browse our most common ones — or call us and we'll walk you through anything.

When can I first sign up for Medicare?
+
You can sign up for Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which starts 3 months before your 65th birthday and ends 3 months after. If you're still on employer coverage, you may be able to delay without penalty — give us a call and we'll walk you through the right timing for your situation.
What's the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement?
+
Medicare Advantage (Part C) replaces your Original Medicare through a private insurer — often with a $0 premium and added benefits like dental and vision, but with networks and copays. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) works alongside Original Medicare to cover your cost-sharing — higher monthly premium but more predictable costs and the freedom to see any Medicare doctor nationwide. The right choice depends on your health, budget, and travel habits.
How much does Medicare cost?
+
Most people get Part A (hospital) for free. Part B (medical) has a standard 2026 premium of $185.00/month. From there, your additional costs depend on which plan you choose — some Medicare Advantage plans have $0 premium, while Medicare Supplement plans typically range from $80–$200/month depending on your age and location. We'll show you every option available in your area.
Does using an insurance broker cost me anything?
+
No — our service is completely free. Insurance carriers pay us a commission when we help you enroll, but CMS (the federal agency that oversees Medicare) regulates these commissions. You pay the exact same premium whether you work with us or enroll directly. There is never any cost to you for our advice, plan comparisons, or ongoing support.
Can I keep my current doctors?
+
It depends on the plan. With Medicare Supplement (Medigap), you can see any doctor in the US who accepts Medicare — there are no networks. With Medicare Advantage, you'll want to check that your preferred doctors and specialists are in the plan's network. We always check this for you before making a recommendation.
What is Hospital Indemnity Insurance and do I need it?
+
Hospital Indemnity Insurance pays you a daily cash benefit for each day you're hospitalized — regardless of what Medicare covers. The average hospital stay costs $2,593 out of pocket. This benefit can cover those costs, your mortgage, groceries, or anything else you need. It works alongside your Medicare plan and can be a smart, affordable safety net — especially for those on Medicare Advantage where copays can add up quickly during a hospitalization.
What happens if I miss my enrollment window?
+
Missing your Initial Enrollment Period for Part B can result in a permanent 10% premium penalty for every 12-month period you were eligible but didn't enroll. Part D also has a late enrollment penalty. However, if you have qualifying coverage (like employer insurance), you may be able to delay enrollment without penalty. Call us before you turn 65 — we'll map out the right timing for your situation.
Can I change my Medicare plan after I enroll?
+
Yes — during the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15–Dec 7), you can switch Medicare Advantage or Part D plans. Switching Medicare Supplement plans outside of your Open Enrollment Period is subject to medical underwriting in most states, which is why getting it right the first time matters. We review your plan with you every year to make sure you're still in the best option.
